About the band
When Hooghwater self-released their five song debut EP in early 2008, it created a slight sensation among critics about the bands remarkable and versatile sound. “Clearly indebted to the seventies, yet delightfully authentic”, wrote Dutch leading music magazine OOR. “Exciting, inventive and rhythmically particularly interesting”, said Dutch hardrock authority Aardschok Magazine.
But while gaining much acclaim with their first effort, the group itself understood that they had only just hinted at their full potential. In a musical climate that often lacks depth, Hooghwater dig beneath the surface, absorbing influences ranging from the psychedelic era of rock and jazz to the heyday of punk with groups such as The Wipers.
The five tracks on their EP were only partly evidence of that. With bassist Dave van Beek added to the groups line-up, Joseph Meurs (guitar/vocals), Chris Blankers (guitar) and Ries Doms (drums) spent the past year refining and reshaping their music.
This has now resulted in the bands first full length album, on which Hooghwater shows a significant progression while retaining their distinctive sound and imminent vibe. Thunderous drums are still there, as well as some monstrous riffs, but on [“Echos”] the band displays a new found confidence and wit, musical ingeniousness, and not in the least, the ability to write a good song. With their first full length album ready to be launched, Hooghwater are now bringing their unique blend of psychedelic rock to stages all over Europe.

Laten we het over één ding eens zijn: 2009 is een topjaar voor de Nederlandse underground. Devil’s Blood, Astrosoniq, Suimasen en dan als pièce de résistance dit Hooghwater uit Tilburg. Vorig jaar debuteerden ze met een EP waar het beste van jaren zeventig psychedelica en hardrock op samenkwam. Geweldige plaat, maar achteraf beschouwd vooral een warming up.
Dat zegt veel over de kwaliteit van Echos, aangezien die EP al niet misselijk was. Kon Hooghwater toen zijn stijl tot in alle finesses oefenen, nu staat er een band die comfortabel met de grenzen van het genre speelt. Soms blijven ze perfect binnen die lijnen en levert het jakkerende stoner op (Electric Ghost) of de meest spaced-out psychedelica van dit jaar (Echos). Maar helemaal genieten is het als Hooghwater onverwachts een muzikale schatkamer opent. De viool die bij Keelhauling met een natuurlijke vanzelfsprekendheid invalt – fenomenaal gedaan. Het zijn elementen die bijna niet opvallen, omdat het allemaal zo akelig perfect op z’n plek valt. Echos is dan ook van een uitzonderlijke klasse. Gauw maar de hoofdredactie mailen of Hooghwater nog in de jaarlijst meekan. OOR MAGAZINE
Het is een heerlijk album vol nostalgisch klinkende rockmuziek, die weids en meeslepend is, of stampend en dreunend. Geweldig laverend tussen stonerrock, hardrock, psychedelica en zelfs prog. Duizelingwekkende tempowisselingen en slimme hooks staan net zo hoog in het vaandel als pakkende, simpele en rechttoe rechtaan rock. De heren lijken van mening dat alles moet kunnen en na negen nummers weet je dat het ook zo is. Nederland, dompel je onder in de muziek van een geweldige band met een perfecte naam. REVOLVER MAGAZINE
